Nutrition Center Do you know where we get our fabulous breakfast and lunch items, soups and baked goods? They are all prepared in the Nutrition Center by thirty employees who make most of our menu items from scratch. They work in huge quantities and use 50-pound bags of flour, 60-pound pails of honey and 35-pound blocks of butter. The 300-gallon kettle and cook-chill operation makes it possible to prepare 30,000 lunch servings in just a few hours. Some of the foods produced include sloppy Joes, taco meat, apple topping and chili. Once the items are cooked and chilled, the Nutrition Center Distribution staff sends the food out to the schools on delivery trucks. Over 20,000 pounds of food is delivered to schools each day.The Nutrition Center also includes a warehouse where canned goods and fresh and frozen foods are stored. Employees use forklifts to move pallets of fresh produce from large coolers to the dock where they are loaded onto delivery trucks. The Nutrition Center distributes over 32 tons of salad lettuce a year to Saint Paul Schools! The Nutrition Center staff is a close-knit group that enjoys working together. Sixteen Nutrition Center employees have worked there longer than 12 years and three have been employees longer than 20 years. They know they have a very important job—providing nutritious, delicious food to the students of Saint Paul Public Schools.Take a virtual tour of the Nutrition Center. |
